Medical Disclaimer

Version 2026-05-14.v3 · Effective 14 May 2026

If this is an emergency, do not use Aliqa. Call your local emergency number - 999 in the United Kingdom, 112 in the European Union, 911 in the United States, 995 in Singapore. For non-emergency NHS advice in the UK, call 111.

Aliqa is an educational tool - not a medical service

Aliqa helps you build awareness of your daily eating patterns by analysing photos of your meals and giving you AI-generated feedback aligned with established public-health frameworks for healthy eating - the NHS Eatwell Guide, the Harvard Healthy Eating Plate, the EAT-Lancet Commission, the NOVA food-processing classification, the UK FSA Nutrient Profiling Model, and the ICQC 2015 international scientific consensus on glycemic index and glycemic load. Inclusion of a framework here is not an endorsement of Aliqa by its authors or by the issuing body.

Aliqa is not a medical device. It is not registered, approved or certified as a medical device in the United Kingdom, the European Union, the United States, Singapore, or any other jurisdiction. It does not provide medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment, and is not intended to be used for any medical purpose.

Aliqa does not replace a clinician. The scores, tags, and recommendations you see are generated by AI (third-party large language models processing your photos and descriptions) and are approximate. They may miss hidden ingredients, oils, sugar, sauces, preparation method, cooking technique, your portion size, your individual health needs, your medications, your allergies, your microbiome, or your metabolic context. They are general information for the average healthy adult, not a personalised care plan, not a prescription, not a dietary protocol, and not a substitute for advice from a qualified healthcare professional.

No doctor-patient or dietitian-client relationship is created between you and us, our staff, our advisers, or any of our sub-processors by your use of the Service.

Do not make medical decisions based on Aliqa

You must not use the Service:

  • to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease or medical condition;
  • to make any dosing decision about insulin, oral hypoglycemic medication, or any other prescription or over-the-counter medicine;
  • to manage type 1 or type 2 diabetes, hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, or any condition where carbohydrate or glycemic load needs to be tracked precisely;
  • to manage food allergies, food intolerances, coeliac disease, or any condition that requires the strict avoidance of an ingredient - Aliqa cannot reliably detect hidden allergens from a photo and you must always check labels and ingredients lists yourself;
  • to manage chronic kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, gout, or any other condition that requires close dietary supervision;
  • to plan a pregnancy or breastfeeding diet, where individual nutritional needs differ from the general adult average;
  • to coach, advise, or supervise another person's diet (Aliqa is for your own awareness only).

If any of the above applies to you, please consult your GP, your specialist, or a registered dietitian before using the Service or before changing your diet in response to anything you see in the App.

Eating disorders, body image, and disordered eating

Tools that score food and rank days can be unhelpful - sometimes harmful - for people with a history of disordered eating.

Please do not use Aliqa if:

  • you are currently being treated for, or are in recovery from, anorexia, bulimia, binge-eating disorder, ARFID, OSFED, or any other eating disorder;
  • a clinician has advised you not to use food-tracking apps, calorie-tracking apps, or to limit your engagement with body-image-related content;
  • you are under the care of an eating-disorder service.

If you are struggling with disordered eating in the United Kingdom, please contact Beat at beateatingdisorders.org.uk, call 0808 801 0677 (England) / 0808 801 0432 (Scotland) / 0808 801 0433 (Wales) / 0808 801 0434 (Northern Ireland), or speak to your GP. In the European Union, please contact your national eating-disorder support service or your GP. In an emergency, see "If this is an emergency" below.

Aliqa is for healthy adults

By using the Service you confirm that you are at least 18 years old, that you are already healthy enough to adjust your own diet without supervision, and that you are not relying on the Service to manage a medical condition. If you are not sure whether the Service is right for you, please ask your GP or a registered dietitian before signing up.

What the AI does - and does not - see

The AI:

  • identifies foods and portion sizes from your photo or text description;
  • assigns nutritional tags (for example protein, fiber, high_gi, processed); and
  • scores your day on three dimensions (Glycemic Balance, Meal Composition, Food Quality) on a 1–10 scale each.

The AI does not:

  • weigh your food;
  • measure its calorie or macronutrient content;
  • detect specific allergens with the reliability of a label-reading or laboratory test;
  • have access to your medical history, medications, blood-glucose data, gut microbiome data, genetic data, or any other clinical information about you;
  • replace a registered dietitian, a clinical nutritionist, a physician, or a pharmacist.

If the analysis is wrong, please edit the meal in the App (see your account → meal entry → Edit) and the score will recompute. This is also how you exercise your right to obtain human review of an automated decision under UK GDPR Article 22.
